The Life Events Transition Team will review your information and will freeze the account(s) for the deceased individual. This will protect the assets in the accounts until we receive the necessary documentation to transfer the funds to you or the beneficiary.

Yes! In most cases, non-spouse beneficiaries are required to liquidate the inherited IRA within 10 years. As an alternative of liquidating, you can transfer the inherited IRA funds to a non-retirement account at Dodge & Cox Funds.

Transfer the account into your own existing or new IRA.

• Effective January 1, 2023, you are not required to take a required minimum distribution (RMD) until you reach 73 (70½ for those born before July 1, 1949) if you establish a traditional IRA. If you turned 72 in 2022 or earlier, you will need to continue taking RMDs as scheduled.
• Treat the IRA as your own and make contributions. Your contributions may be tax deductible if you meet income eligibility rules.

Transfer to an inherited IRA.

• If your spouse was taking RMD distributions, you must take your first RMD by December 31 of the year following the original IRA owner's death.
• If your spouse was not yet taking RMD distributions, you do not have to begin taking RMD distributions until the year the original IRA owner would have turned 73 or over (70½ for those born before July 1, 1949).
• You cannot make additional contributions to an inherited IRA.

A medallion signature guarantee is a certification that authorizes a transfer of securities to you. You can obtain one from a domestic bank or trust company, broker, dealer, clearing agency, savings association, or other financial institution which participates in a Medallion program recognized by the Securities Transfer Association. We cannot accept signature guarantees from financial institutions which do not participate in a Medallion program. A notary public cannot provide signature guarantees.

An inheritance transfer of mutual fund shares is a complicated tax issue. We encourage you to seek advice from an independent tax advisor prior to transferring shares. Once processed, you will NOT be able to change the tax lots used to fulfill the request. We will use the fair market value of the inherited shares on the date of death as the cost basis for the inherited shares in the account of the transferee unless you provide alternate instructions and include appropriate documentation of an alternate valuation date. Please consult with the executor of, or tax advisor to, the deceased shareholder's estate to determine if cost basis should be determined by reference to a value on an alternate date.
